DNA of a Shot — Issue #1: The Framework
Welcome
Thanks for subscribing. After many years in this business, I wanted to understand the underlying structure of shots. What makes them work? What are the fundamental elements?
I’m not sure if what I’ve figured out is correct or if it’s complete. But it helps me navigate projects and keep everyone’s focus on the right goals—especially when we’re working under extreme pressure.
I hope the thoughts I share in this newsletter help you see solutions where you only saw pain before. Pain and suffering aren’t bad per se. We like to call them “challenges” to soften the words, but how it feels is the same. The pressure is real. The deadlines are real.
The DNA of a Shot: HLLCM
I’ve broken down every shot into five fundamental elements:
H — Hero (the vehicle)
L — Location (the environment)
L — Light (quality and mood)
C — Camera (perspective and framing)
M — Motion (movement or stillness)
These five inputs—with all their interdependencies and subcategories—make up a shot, whether it’s a film sequence or a still photo.
What’s Coming
In the coming newsletters, I’ll elaborate on each element. I’ll share real cases, samples, and the decisions we made under pressure.
But here’s what would make this worthwhile for me: The more I can have a conversation with you—the readers—the more I’ll consider this effort a success. So if something resonates, or if you disagree, or if you’re facing a specific challenge… reply and tell me please.
See you next month,
Faruk
